Joanna Zienkiewicz (2022)
The jury of the Hélène Nolthenius Prize 2022 has selected Joanna Zienkiewicz as the winner from all the high-quality entries for the graduation thesis 'Cultural Rupture: Popular Music as a Discursive Tool of Contemporary Polish Populism'.
Among other things, the jury was very pleased with the considerable nuance in the author's approach. Zienkiewicz frames these developments not only as a straightforward dispute between populist and non-populist forces, but as a complex dialectic that even produces 'anti-populist populism'. The jury also greatly appreciates the range of sources and theoretical frameworks from which the author draws, which go significantly beyond the disciplinary boundaries of musicology and include extensive literature from the political and sociological sciences.
The jury for the Hélène Nolthenius Prize 2022 consisted of Dr. Annelies Andries (Utrecht University, KVNM), Prof. Dr. David Burn (Catholic University of Leuven) and Dr. Marten Noorduin (Musikhochschule Lübeck).
